A Puzzle Piece of History: Meet John Spilsbury
Jigsaw puzzles have been a source of education and entertainment for centuries, and their origin can be traced back to John Spilsbury, a British cartographer and engraver. In the 1760s, Spilsbury glued a map of Europe to a piece of hardwood and carefully cut around each country. The result? The world's first dissected map, what we now know as a jigsaw puzzle.
This innovative tool was initially created to help children learn geography. But Spilsbury quickly realized the potential for a new product. He began producing more puzzles featuring maps of Asia, Africa, the Americas, and the British Isles.

From Educational Tools to Family Pastimes
After Spilsbury's untimely death at age 30, his wife, Sarah May, took over the business. She later married Harry Ashby, Spilsbury's former apprentice, and together they continued to sell puzzles.
At the time, all puzzles were handmade from wood and considered too expensive for everyday play. Jigsaw puzzles became more affordable and accessible when manufacturers started using cardboard instead of wood in the late 1800s. This shift turned into a beloved pastime for the masses.
