You open a brand new jigsaw puzzle, pour out the pieces, and there it is: puzzle dust. While it’s a regular part of the manufacturing process, puzzle dust can be messy, cling to surfaces, and sometimes interfere with the puzzling experience. Fortunately, it’s easy to remove puzzle dust with a few simple steps so that you can start your puzzle without the extra debris. Learn more about puzzle dust and how to remove it from your jigsaw puzzles.

What Is Puzzle Dust?
Puzzle dust is the residue of cardboard left over from the cutting process. In most cases, puzzle dust is harmless but chaotic: it can get under your fingernails, stick to your puzzle table, or cloud the surface of glass or clear mats. If you have dust allergies, you may be sensitive to puzzle dust, and it could trigger a reaction.
Five Easy Ways to Get Rid of Puzzle Dust

Use a Mesh Strainer or Colander
Empty the puzzle box with all its pieces into a large mesh strainer or kitchen colander, and gently shake it over a sink or trash can. The dust will fall through the holes, leaving the pieces cleaner. This method is considered one of the most thorough ways to remove puzzle dust.

Shake Pieces in a Zip Bag
Put all the puzzle pieces in a large resealable bag, seal it, and gently shake. Open a small corner and tap out the dust. You can also do this inside the puzzle box itself, but there is a slight chance of leftover puzzle dust.

Lay Pieces on a Towel
Spread your puzzle pieces out on a clean towel and gently rub the pieces back and forth. The fibers help pick up and contain dust while protecting the pieces. Microfiber towels are great for removing puzzle dust and cleaning your puzzles altogether!

Brush Off the Dust
Use a soft-bristled brush (or a paintbrush) to gently brush your puzzle pieces, removing any lingering puzzle dust. Focus on nooks and crannies where dust loves to hide. Toothbrushes can also work for removing puzzle dust.

Wipe Down the Box Interior
Don’t forget about the box itself! Wipe out the inside of the puzzle box with a dry rag, microfiber cloth, or pater towel to remove leftover dust before storing or reusing it. This is especially important if you are using the box as part of Step #2.
Keep Your Puzzle Area Cleaner
Removing puzzle dust helps keep your puzzling area tidy and ensures a better grip and clearer view of your pieces. It’s a quick step that makes a big difference, especially if you’re using a white or glass tabletop.
