There’s something special about sitting down around a table with people who love puzzles as much as you do. A jigsaw puzzle community is simply a network of enthusiasts—local or online—who share tips, swap puzzles, join events, and encourage one another. It works through meetups, puzzle competitions, and discussions where members post, plan, and participate together.
Recently, Bits and Pieces welcomed board members from the Indiana Jigsaw Puzzle Association (INJPA) and Ohio Jigsaw Puzzle Association to our warehouse for a night filled with puzzles, friendly competition, and plenty of conversation about a shared favorite pastime.
Bringing the Puzzle Community Together
Jigsaw puzzles may be something you can enjoy on your own, but puzzling also has an incredible ability to bring people together. A jigsaw puzzle community thrives when people share resources, organize events, and welcome newcomers. Be sure to check out our own Facebook group, where thousands of members regularly share tricks, strategies, and stories.
Jigsaw puzzle clubs, competitions, and associations give enthusiasts opportunities to meet other puzzlers, test their skills, and share their love of the hobby. Organizations like the Indiana and Ohio Jigsaw Puzzle Associations help build those connections at a local and regional level.
They typically organize meetups on a recurring basis, choosing themes such as landscapes, gradients, or novelty cuts, and posting sign-up links online. These puzzle clubs often split sessions into casual tables, speed puzzling heats, and cooperative builds.
We were excited to welcome board members from both organizations to Bits and Pieces and learn more about the communities they've built. And, of course, we couldn't get a group of puzzle enthusiasts together without doing some puzzling!
Seeing Competitive Puzzlers in Action
During their visit, our guests spent plenty of time at the puzzle table, working together and putting their speed-puzzling skills to the test. For members of the Bits and Pieces team, getting to watch experienced competitive puzzlers in action was a highlight of the evening.

Competitive puzzling puts a completely different spin on a familiar hobby. Instead of settling in for an afternoon or evening with a puzzle, competitors race against the clock to sort pieces, identify patterns, and complete their puzzles as quickly as possible.
Many puzzle competitions feature individual and team events, timed qualifiers, and finals in which speed puzzling determines the winners. Some clubs even add puzzle chess—alternating turns placing pieces under time pressure.
But whether you're racing against the clock or working at your own pace, the same love of puzzling brings everyone to the table.
More Than a Solo Hobby
Puzzle associations and local jigsaw puzzle clubs provide another way to experience this analog hobby, creating communities where people can meet fellow enthusiasts and participate in puzzle events and competitions.
The benefits of joining a jigsaw puzzle community include meeting new friends, improving problem-solving skills, discovering new brands and cuts, borrowing and swapping puzzles, and gaining access to puzzle competitions and workshops. Many members also enjoy structured practice, such as speed-puzzling drills and puzzle-chess nights, that sharpen techniques for events.
Our day with the Indiana and Ohio Jigsaw Puzzle Associations was a wonderful reminder that the finished puzzle is only part of what makes this hobby special. Sometimes, the people sitting around the puzzle table are just as important.
