How Puzzles Became One of America’s Favorite Ways to Manage Stress
Many of us have found ourselves looking for healthier, more relaxing ways to deal with everyday stress in the past few years. While some turned to baking, gardening, or walking outdoors, millions rediscovered an activity that's as nostalgic as it is rewarding: jigsaw puzzles.
At Bits and Pieces, we've long known that puzzles provide more than just entertainment—they offer a moment of calm, a screen-free escape, and a sense of accomplishment. So, we decided to dig a little deeper. We surveyed over 1,000 Americans to understand how puzzling—and other hobbies—have helped people manage stress in recent years. Here's what we found.

A Resurgence in Puzzling—Across All Ages
When people were spending more time at home, puzzles surged in popularity. 60% of survey respondents said they completed more puzzles during the pandemic—averaging more than seven puzzles per person in a single year. Even now, with routines shifting back to normal, puzzles are a top choice for stress relief and relaxation.

Surprisingly, Gen Z (ages 18–24) spent the longest stretches of time puzzling—over three consecutive hours at a time. But they weren't the only dedicated solvers. Across generations, puzzles became a way to unplug, unwind, and feel a sense of progress—one piece at a time.

Why People Turn to Puzzles
So, why are puzzles so helpful for stress relief?
- 42% of respondents said they enjoy the mental benefits of puzzling, citing improved memory and focus.
- 25% said puzzles offer a healthy escape from daily worries.
- 22% said puzzling feels meditative, helping them stay present and quiet racing thoughts.
Whether you're piecing together a peaceful landscape, a challenging shaped puzzle, or a nostalgic scene from childhood, puzzles pull you in—and that's a good thing.

Stress and the Role of Hobbies
It's no surprise that stress levels remain high. Respondents rated their daily stress level at 6.1 out of 10, with healthcare workers reporting the highest levels overall. Many said that carving out time for stress-relieving hobbies like puzzling helped them feel more balanced and productive, especially as work, family, and technology demands continue to grow.
Among all respondents:
- 72% said puzzles and games were their favorite way to relax
- 49% chose reading
- 43% turned to walking or exercising
One notable trend? Older generations preferred entirely screen-free hobbies, something our puzzles deliver with every box.

Puzzling Is More Than a Pastime
Today, puzzling isn't just a fun way to pass the time—it's a form of self-care. 84% of respondents said puzzling is a self-care activity, whether they puzzle alone, with family, or with friends. Some use it to unwind after work, others as a break from technology, and many simply enjoy watching the whole picture come together. Whether you're looking for a new 1000-piece challenge, a shaped puzzle that puts a twist on tradition, or a cozy puzzle table to make your hobby even more enjoyable, we're here to help you piece together peace of mind.
